The RoTunneling VPN app for Linux runs on Debian 12+, Ubuntu 22.04+ and derived distributions, on 64-bit PCs (amd64) and ARM64. It has a graphical interface and the rotunneling command for the terminal.

Install

Recommended: the signed APT repository. You get updates with sudo apt upgrade.

sudo install -d -m 0755 /etc/apt/keyrings
curl -fsSL https://repo.rotunneling.net/rotunneling.asc | sudo gpg --dearmor --yes -o /etc/apt/keyrings/rotunneling.gpg
echo "deb [signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/rotunneling.gpg] https://repo.rotunneling.net/ stable main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/rotunneling.list
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install rotunneling

If you already use the repository for version 5, run only the last two commands.

Or the .deb package: download it from Download the app for Linux and install it with sudo apt install ./rotunneling_*.deb.

The rotunneling package replaces the old rotunnelingvpn 5.x client. During installation the old app, its service and its saved sign-in details are removed automatically.

Connect from the app

  1. Open RoTunneling VPN from the applications menu.
  2. Enter your RoTunneling username and password and press Log in.
  3. Under Server, keep Automatic (fastest) or pick Romania 1 or Romania 2.
  4. Press Connect. When the status shows Protected, your traffic leaves from Romania.

You do not need to set ports or protocols. The app tests the network and uses the transport mode that works: TCP with UDP acceleration, UDP, DNS or ICMP, and on very strict networks a cloud relay or WebSocket over a CDN. Every mode starts like a browser, on port 443.

Connect from the terminal

rotunneling login username
rotunneling connect --kill-switch
rotunneling status
rotunneling disconnect

The command controls the same connection as the app. rotunneling help lists every option, for example picking a server (--server buc-1) or an HTTP proxy (--proxy host:port).

Useful settings

  • Kill switch: blocks internet traffic if the VPN disconnects. It is off by default.
  • Connect when the app starts: connects automatically when you open the app.
  • Proxy settings: for networks that require an HTTP proxy, with an optional username and password.
  • Diagnostics: speed tests and connection history.

Troubleshooting

  • "Wrong username or password": use your rotunneling.net account details. If you forgot the password, press Forgot password? in the app.
  • "Connection limit reached": disconnect another device or choose a subscription with more connections.
  • "The VPN component failed to start": check the service with systemctl status rotunneling-helper and restart it with sudo systemctl restart rotunneling-helper.
  • "No RoTunneling server is reachable": check your internet connection. If your network requires a proxy, fill it in under Proxy settings.
  • Slow or unstable connection: in Diagnostics press Delete tests and reset learning, then connect again.
  • As an alternative without the app, you can use OpenVPN. For any problem, write to [email protected].
